Brilliant Black Minds (BBM)

While education is seen as race-neutral, the truth is that a plethora of practices throughout the school system continues to continue to negatively affect students based on race. While class and wealth disparities have also played a role in educational inequalities, the principal reason for the inequalities observed is that education is deeply rooted in Anti-Black Racism.

We created a separate tutoring program to not only alleviate the economic strain of seeking educational support for Black families but also help create conditions of success for Black youth in the community. 

Too often, Black students are left behind, which is why we thought it was necessary to simultaneously address Anti-Black Racism and promote the academic success of Black students. To further support the success of Black students, an academic honorarium will be given to families if the end-of-semester grade point average falls within a certain bracket. This is to offset the rising costs of educational support and to encourage Black youth to prioritize capacity-building and competency-building in preparation for high-opportunity careers in the future. 

This program will provide intentional and culturally responsive educational support. Simply put, REPRESENTATION MATTERS! If you can see it, you can be it. We strive to create conditions of success in and around the workforce for Black youth with an interest in STEAM fields. 

Change starts at the grassroots level, and the hope is that by offering this initiative, we can continue moving towards equity in education and eliminating disparities that exist in high-opportunity employment sectors.

Black students are just as capable, and with access to culturally responsive educational supports, learning outcomes can be improved. Competencies required to enter high-opportunity fields of employment can be built and access to high-opportunity employment can be attained.
